Keyword Optimization

Keyword optimization involves crafting your website copy in a way that consistently uses your main keywords and speaks to search engine spiders as much as it does to your target audience.

This is a new field of copywriting, and it includes everything from writing your page titles and descriptions to the overall content, anchor text and site blogs.

Since search engines tend to put a lot of weight on page titles, this is a primary area of interest for optimized copywriting. The page title is what a person will see in the organic listings of their search engine results so your title needs to be interesting and compelling.

I'm always amazed by how many websites fail to properly explain the page in the title. Also commonly overlooked is the fact that each page should feature a different page title relevant to the content at hand.

For the main content on your page, try to incorporate your main keywords as much as possible. You definitely want to keep a level of eloquence but remember that you don't need to impress with an incredibly diverse vocabulary. Unlike traditional copywriting, the more you use the same popular keywords, the better.

Make sure that your central navigation is in html rather than Flash, as search engines can't read anything inside of a Flash file. And try to anchor your keywords with internal links as much as possible. Naming the page html files with descriptive words will also increase visibility.
